A Day of first's!

Today I ran my first 5k. I signed up with an "old" friend at the beginning of January thinking I would have 3 weeks to train...... BOY WAS I WRONG!!  The day after I registered, I was lucky enough to get a present from my students that would keep me in bed for 3-5 days. Strep does that to you, and it is definitely not fun!

After I was cured of that, I went running a few times, but nothing to serious because I had 2 weeks left right? Oh wait, I forgot I had Parent Conferences. Silly me! So that took out almost a week because I had to prepare my grades, and then the conferences lasted all night and I was just too pooped to do anything else that week!

The last week, I was really really exhausted for some reason and gave upon the running! ha, really stupid of me too! I did stay up in Heber to work at Dairy Keen during the teacher fundraiser, so I had an excuse for one of the nights, right?

I thought I was going to fail miserably and get a horrible time! Let me explain (if I haven't already put you to sleep with my ramblings).

I have been training on a treadmill at the gym, while being distracted from the misery by watching movies in the cardio cinema room. I hardly ever go too! I think in the last 2 months I have gone to the gym around 3-5 times. HORRIBLE!

When I run on the treadmill, which is said to be easier then actually running, I have never done 3 miles in one run. I am a wimp and quite around 2.5, and usually do it in about 45 minutes.

I have never enjoyed running! In high school I was on the Cross Country team, and Track team. Don't remember me on those teams? Oh yea, its probably because I realized 2 weeks into training I realized I hated running! My friend and I would joke around and say "There are better ways to kill ourselves"  I have believed that ever since!

Okay, so without any training, and all the negativeness that I was feeling, I really thought I would do the 5k in about an hour, but was hoping I'd get about 45 Minutes.  Check this out!!.

If you can't tell, I did it in 40.45, which is so much better then I thought! Yes, it is still a slow time, but I am happy that I got it considering my prep work!
This is not my "old" friend. My "old" friend is behind us somewhere, and I am sad I didn't get a picture with her! I call her my old friend because we were friends during Middle School I think it was. She is amazing for many reasons, but today she was amazing because She ran this 5k in 31 minutes, and is going to have a baby in May. Amazing! I also teased her about  being old, but realized I am a week older then her. Shoot!

This friend is Sandy. We met a few years ago and have been really good friends since. We have a lot of similar interests, and challenges in life. She is probably the reason I did so well on my time today. She has done this race a few times, and this year she beat her best time! woot woot! She is really good at always looking at the positive things in life, and is a great motivator. 3......2......1....run!

Michael came to support me at the beginning and at the ending of the race! See me behind the older gentleman? Ya thats my leg with the 97 on it! This race was fun too because I got to run though my old neighborhood and house! It was nice knowing where I  was running!

Coming up to the finish line!
Only one more block! We are still smiling!
At the end of the race, they gave rubber ducks with the word "finisher" on it! What a great feeling to know I was a finisher!

The other "first" that happened today is, after seven years of being married, Michael and I don't have to worry about "who gets the car today" or having to ask "can I have the car today?" because we decided to grow up a little more . Pictures will come soon!

Nice going! 40 minutes without training is amazing! You should keep it up. Running isn't too bad once you get used to it. The first mile is always the worst. ALWAYS!! Get past that, and it's smooth sailing, usually!
